About Us

At Gloucester County Habitat for Humanity, we believe that everyone deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. With the help of permanent affordable housing solutions, families embark on an immediate path to financial stability & self-reliance that transcends generations. Beyond the family unit, homeownership helps Gloucester County preserve the available workforce, often preventing families from leaving the county to seek a better life. In traditionally underinvested neighborhoods, homeownership instills long-term residents with a vested interest in maintaining, advocating for, and investing in resources/ improvements for their neighborhood. Studies provided by Habitat for Humanity International, based on GCHFH’s data, shows homeownership is foundational to child development and growth. Homeownership lifts families from instability, stress, and fear, and encourages self-reliance and confidence.

FAQ’s

What is Habitat for Humanity?

Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states in the United States and in more than 70 countries around the world. Habitat’s vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. How does Habitat for Humanity help families?

People in Gloucester County and all over the world partner with Habitat to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.

How does Habitat for Humanity homeownership work?
  • Families in need of decent, affordable housing apply for homeownership with their local Habitat for Humanity. Gloucester County Habitat for Humanity’s family selection committee selects homeowners based on three criteria:
  • The applicant’s level of need.
  • Their willingness to partner with Habitat.
  • Their ability to repay a mortgage through an affordable payment plan.

Habitat’s homebuyers invest hundreds of hours of their own labor, called sweat equity, working alongside volunteers and other Habitat homeowners, in addition to paying an affordable mortgage and receiving financial education. Habitat for Humanity follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing Habitat’s homeowners

Does Habitat for Humanity only build new houses?

Currently yes, GCHFH only builds new homes for partners in the homeownership Program. Within the next 3 years, GCHFH has plans to launch a repairs program that will help people improve their own homes.
